The Fresh Air Fund, an independent, not-for-profit youth development organization, has provided free summer experiences to more than 1.8 million New York City children from low-income communities since 1877. Despite the challenges presented by COVID-19, The Fund continues to provide safe, fun, engaging and enriching experiences for New York City youth to keep the magic of summer alive through virtual and outdoor programs. The Fresh Air Fund also owns and operates the Sharpe Reservation which houses five of the six Fresh Air Camps, the Sharpe Reservation Environmental Center which serves over 18,000 visitors each year. The Fresh Aid Fund also operates Camp Junior, a camp for young people from the Bronx in Harriman State park.

Position Summary

The intern will gain an interactive, hands-on experience in the nonprofit communications field, including marketing, media relations, publicity and social media.

This role will be a hybrid position and split their time between working remotely and at program sites throughout the Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan and Queens, with occasional day trips to The Fund's camps in Fishkill, NY and at Harriman State Park.

This is a seasonal role from Monday, June 27th through Friday, August 19th. Typical hours will be 9am-5pm, with the possibility for occasional evening and weekend commitments, working no more than 35 hours per week.


  • Interview Fresh Air Fund children, parents, alumni and host families
  • Support creation of digital content for The Fund's blog and social media
  • Review participant records in Salesforce database and create reports on attendance and participation history
  • Conduct research on social media and other digital trends
  • Support uploading and curating content including cataloging and tagging photographs
  • Assist with public relations activities
  • Other duties as assigned


  • Must be at least 18+ years of age. At least one year of college is preferred
  • Required experience: 0-2 years (including internships and work-study programs)
  • Excellent communication skills (written and verbal)
  • Strong organizational, time management and interpersonal skills
  • Drive to learn in a fast-paced environment
  • Ability to work independently, and to follow directions
  • Photography and/or video (recording and/or editing) experience is a plus
  • Interest in joining a youth development organization and supporting its mission and vision

Compensation: $15/hour
