Since 1877, The Fresh Air Fund has unlocked the limitless potential of more than 1.8 million New York City children from low-income communities. Each year, thousands of children enjoy outdoor summer adventures through visits with volunteer host families along the East Coast and Southern Canada and at The Fund's six overnight camps in Upstate New York. Fresh Air children also participate in year-round leadership and educational enrichment programs.

The Fresh Air Fund is recruiting a Mental Health Supervisor for our sleepaway camps.

The Mental Health Supervisor provides supervision and training to members of our camp administrative team that manage behavioral issues and concerns. The role includes performing risk assessments, crisis intervention, and interdisciplinary care planning. This position reports to the Director of Camping & Year Round Programs and is located at one of our sleepaway camps in Upstate New York. This is an independent contractor position that is seasonal and part-time for the summer (6/10 - 8/16).

Responsibilities:

  • Meet regularly with and assist Camper Liaisons and other staff as requested with handling camper behavior issues, including the review of camper applications, daily camper reports and reviewing individual cases
  • Provide training, coaching and supervision both individually and in groups to Camper Liaisons
  • Provide risk assessments and mental health referrals as needed for campers and staff
  • Provide ongoing guidance and training for staff on how to manage challenging camper behaviors and situations
  • Provide guidance on the implementation and creation of individual behavior contracts and plans
  • Guide staff on managing vicarious trauma and increase skills around self-care to avoid burnout
  • Provide ongoing support to Administrative Staff as necessary and reports concerns to Camp Directors in a timely fashion
  • Provide training on Therapeutic Crisis Intervention techniques and trauma-informed care
  • Deliver training to Camp Staff on self-care and wellness
  • Be available as needed and provide support and resource guidance to interdisciplinary crisis care team
  • Provide support to and seek guidance from the Director of Support Services
  • Document, track and maintain case notes and report to Support Services as needed
  • Maintains confidentiality and uses a strengths-based approach
  • Demonstrate a caring, supportive, and professional demeanor, including avoiding fraternizing with staff while on/off duty
  • Invest time with Camp Staff to meet their needs, challenge their capabilities, and serve as a role model during their time at camp

Qualifications:

  • Licensed Mental Health Professional with at least 5 years of supervisory experience in youth counseling
  • Experience working in residential settings with diverse populations
  • Must be able to supervise in a fair and diplomatic manner
  • Passionate about working with children
